Climbing the mountain will give you a greater sense of achievement than being ferried up by the cable car, but proceed with extreme caution: it may look sunny and clear when you leave, but conditions at the top could be very different.

There are fabulous hikes up and along Table Mountain, but they are best done guided, both for mountain safety and because there have been some random muggings of tourists.

Maclear's Beacon

It's about 35 minutes from the top of the Platteklip Gorge on a path leading eastward, with white squares on little yellow footsteps guiding you all the way.

The path crosses the front table with Maclear's Beacon visible at all times.
From the top you'll get views of False Bay and the Hottentots Holland Mountains to the east.
