Cape Town Stadium

Described by British architecture critic Jonathan Glancey as "a stunning white apparition ...in a sublime setting", Cape Town Stadium is arguably the jewel in South Africa's 2010 FIFA World Cup crown.
The 68,000-seat stadium is fifteen floors high, with parking for twelve thousand cars in the basement.
It relies on natural light, and at night the open-meshed roof can glow to resemble an ethereal  UFO landed in Green Park.

In 2011, once the final World Cup whistle had been blown, the Ajax Cape Town football team used it as their home ground and, in the same year, it was packed to the rafters when Irish rockers U2 came to town.

Cape Town, Muizenberg

Foto di Muizenberg, Città del Capo, centro
Questa foto di Muizenberg è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Once South Africa's most fashionable beachfront, Muizenberg is now a bit run-down, though nothing detracts from the fact that it has a long, safe and fabulous beach that shelves gently, making it the most popular spot along the peninsula for swimming.

It also has some terrific beachfront coffee shops that draw the crowds, especially over weekends.

The brightly coloured bathing boxes along the beach are reminders of a more elegant heyday, when the resort was visited by the likes of Agatha Christie, who enjoyed riding its waves while holidaying here in the 1920s:" Whenever we could steal time off", she wrote, "we got out our surf boards and went surfing".

Cape Town, Boulders Beach

Foto di Boulders Beach, Città del Capo, centro
Questa foto di Boulders Beach è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Boulders Beach takes its name from its huge granite rocks, which create a cluster of little coves with sandy beaches and clear sea pools, which are gorgeous for swimming.

However, the main reason people come to Boulders' fenced seafront reserve is for the African penguins (formerly known as jackass penguins).

Questa foto di Boulders Beach è offerta da TripAdvisor.

African penguins usually live on islands off the west side of the South African coast, and the Boulders birds form one of only two mainland colonies in the world.

This is also the only place where the endangered species are actually increasing in numbers, and provides a rare opportunity to get a close look at them.

Access to the Boulders reserve is through two gates, one at the Boulders Beach (eastern) end, off Bellevue Road and the other at the Seaforth Beach (western) side, off Seaforth Road.
Both entrances are signposted along Main Road between Simon's Town and Cape Point.

At Seaforth, there's a small visitors' centre and deck, from which two boardwalks lead to either end of Foxy Beach where you'll see hundreds of penguins.

Most people walk from Seaforth to Boulders, looking at all the penguins in the bushes along the paths, where there are masses of burrows for nesting..
At Seaforth itself, there is safe swimming on the beach, which is bounded on one side by the looming grey mass of the naval base.
While there are no facilities of any kind on Boulders Beach, there is a restaurant with outdoor  seating and fresh fish on the menu at both of the entrances to Boulders.

Cape Town, Adderley Street

Foto di Adderly Street, Città del Capo, centro
Questa foto di Adderly Street è offerta da TripAdvisor.

Once the place to shop in Cape Town, Adderley Street, lined with handsome buildings from several centuries, is still worth a stroll today.
Its attractive streetscape has been blemished somewhat by a series of large 1960s and 1970s shopping centres but, just minutes from crowded malls, among the streets and alleys around Greenmarket square, you can still find some human scale and historic texture.

Questa foto di Adderly Street è offerta da TripAdvisor.
One of the ugliest buildings erected in the 1970s is the Golden Acre shopping complex, dominating the north (harbour) end of Adderley Street, which is a hub for much of Cape Town's public transport.

Although the mall itself and its environs are anything but picturesque, here you do get an authentic taste of ordinary Capetonians doing their shopping.

Among the pavements and pedestrianized section outside, which run down to the station, there's a closely packed flea market offering curios, crafts and electronic goods.

A little further south lies the Adderley Street Flower Market at Trafalgar Place, in Adderley Street between Strand and Darling streets, run by members of the Bo-Kaap Muslim community, who are known for their sharp wit.

Continuing south, two grandiose bank buildings stand on opposite sides of Adderley Street: the fussier of the two, the erstwhile Standard Bank, fronted by Corinthian columns and covered with a tall dome -  a temple to the partnership of empire and finance - is now an upmarket restaurant and coffee shop.

The First National Bank, completed in 1913, was the last South African building designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

Cape Town, The Cape Flats, Langa Township

Foto di Langa Township, Città del Capo, centro
Questa foto di Langa Township è offerta da TripAdvisor.

East of the northern and southern suburbs, among the industrial smokestacks and the windswept Cape Flats, reaching well beyond the airport, is Cape Town's largest residential quartier, taking in the coloured districts, African townships and shantytown squatter camps.

The Cape Flats are exactly that: flat, barren and populous, exclusively inhabited by Africans and coloured in separate areas, with the M5 acting as a dividing line between it and the southern suburbs.

Questa foto di Langa Township è offerta da TripAdvisor.

The African townships were historically set up as dormitories to provide labour for white Cape Town, not as places to build a life, which is why they had no facilities and no real hub.

The men-only hostels, another apartheid relic, are at the root of many of the area's social problems. During the 1950s, the government set out a blueprint to turn the tide of Africans flooding into Cape Town.

No African was permitted to settle permanently in the Cape west of a line near the Fish River, the old frontier over 1.000 km from Cape Town; women were entirely banned from seeking work in Cape Town and men prohibited from bringing their wives to join them.
By 1970 there were ten men for every woman in Langa.

In the end, apartheid failed to prevent the influx of work-seekers desperate to come to Cape Town. Where people couldn't find legal accomodation they set up squatter camps of makeshift iron, cardboard and plastic sheeting.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the government attempted to demolish these and destroy anything left inside, but no sooner had the police left than camps reappeared, and they are now a permanent feature of the Cape Flats.

One of the best known of all South Africa's squatter camps is Crossroads, whose inhabitants suffered campaign of harassment that included killings by apartheid collaborators and police, and continuous attempts to bulldoze it out of existence.

Through sheer determination and desperation its residents hung on, eventually winning the right to stay.
Today, the government is making attempts to improve conditions in the shantytowns by introducing electricity, running water and sanitation, as well as buildings tiny brick houses to replace the shacks.

Langa is the oldest and most central township, lying just east of the white suburb of Pinelands and north of the N2.
In this relentlessly grey place, without the tiniest patch of green relief, you'll find women selling sheep and goat's heads, alongside state-of-the-art public phone bureaus run by enterprising township businessmen from inside recycled cargo containers.
Families live in fairly smart suburban houses while, not far away, there are former men-only hostels where as many as three families share one room.

TOWNSHIP TOURS AND HOMESTAYS

Several projects are under way to encourage tourists into the townships but, as a high proportion of Cape Town's nearly two thousand annual murders take place here, the recommended way to visit is on one of the tours organised by two special companies: The Andulela Tours and The Bonani Our Pride.

Foto di Langa Township, Città del Capo, centro
Questa foto di Langa Township è offerta da TripAdvisor.

All of these tours are operated by residents of the Cape Flats, or in cooperation with local communities, and emphasize face-to-face encounters with ordinary people.
They include visits to shebeens, nightclubs and a township restaurant, chats with residents of squatter camps and the Langa hostels, and meetings with traditional healers and music makers, township artists and craftworkers.

Some tours also take in "sites of political struggle", where significant events in the fight against apartheid occurred.

If you want to really get under the skin of the townships, there's no better way than staying in one of the townships B & B, which offer pleasant, friendly and safe accomodation.

Cape Town, Clifton

Fashionable Clifton, on the next cove along Victoria Road - the M6 - from Bantry Bay, sits on the most expensive real estate in Africa, studded with fancy seaside apartments and with four sandy beaches, reached via steep stairways separated by clusters of granite boulders.

The sea here is good for surfing and safe for swimming, but bone-chillingly cold !

Bring your own refreshments as there's only one overpriced café, although adjacent Camps Bay is packed with them.

The beaches here are sheltered from the wind and popular with muscular ball-players and families alike, and are especially recommended on summer evenings to enjoy the sunset and cool of the day.

Cape Town, St George's Cathedral

St George's Cathedral, at Queen Victoria and Wale streets, is interesting as much for its history as for its Herbert Baker Victorian Gothic design; on September 7, 1986, Desmond Tutu hammered on its doors , symbolically demanding to be enthroned as South Africa's first black archbishop.

Three years later, he heralded the last days of apartheid by leading thirty thousand people from the Cathedral to the City Hall, where he coined his now famous slogan for the new order:

"We are the rainbow people !",

he told the crowd,

"We are the new people of South Africa !"
