The South African Jewish Museum is partially housed in South Africa's first synagogue, built in 1863.
One of Cape Town's most ambitious and successful permanent exhibitions, it tells the story of South African Jewry from its beginnings over 150 years ago to the present, a narrative that starts in the Old Synagogue, from which visitors cross, via a gangplank, to the upper level of a new two-storey building, symbolically re-enacting the arrival by boat of the first Jewish immigrants at Table Bay in the 1840s.

Multimedia interactive displays, models and Judaica artefacts follow three threads:
Memories, looking at the roots and experienced of the immigrants;
Reality, covering their integration into South Africa;
Dreams, examining a diversity of views about the role of Jews in South Africa, their relationship to Israel and their position in the world.
