Cape Town, South African Jewish Museum

The South African Jewish Museum is partially housed in South Africa's first synagogue, built in 1863.

One of Cape Town's most ambitious and successful permanent exhibitions, it tells the story of South African Jewry from its beginnings over 150 years ago to the present, a narrative that starts in the Old Synagogue, from which visitors cross, via a gangplank, to the upper level of a new two-storey building, symbolically re-enacting the arrival by boat of the first Jewish immigrants at Table Bay in the 1840s.

Multimedia interactive displays, models and Judaica artefacts follow three threads:

Memories, looking at the roots and experienced of the immigrants;
Reality, covering their integration into South Africa;
Dreams, examining a diversity of views about the role of Jews in South Africa, their relationship to Israel and their position in the world.

South Africa, Lion's Head

Halfway along the road called Signal Hill, is a sacred Islamic kramat, one of several dotted around the peninsula that "protect" the city.

You can also walk up Lion's Head,  a non-strenuous hike that seems to bring out half the population of Cape Town every full moon, but it should always be done in a group, as is it potentially unsafe to walk alone.

South Africa, Signal Hill

From the roundabout at the top of Kloofneck, a road leads all the way along Signal Hill, to a car park and lookout, with good views over Table Bay, the docks and the city.

A cannon was formerly used for sending signals to ships at anchor in the bay, and the Noon Gun, still fired from its slopes daily, send a thunderous rumble through the Bo-Kaap and city centre below.

South Africa, Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula

To appreciate Cape Town you need to spend time outdoors, as Capetonians do: they hike, picnic or sunbathe, often choose mountain bikes in preference to cars, and turn adventure activities into a passion.

Sailboarders from around the world head for Table Bay for some of the world's best windsurfing, and the brave jump off Lion's Head and paraglide down close to the Clifton beachfront.

But the city offers sedate pleasures as well, along its hundreds of paths and 150 kilometers of beaches.

Cape Town's rich urban texture is immediately apparent in its diverse architecture: an indigenous Cape Dutch style, rooted in northern Europe, seen at its most diverse in the Constantia wine estates, which were influenced by French refugees in the seventeenth century; Muslims dissidents and slaves, freed in the nineteenth century, added their minarets to the skyline; and the English, who invaded and freed these slaves, introduced Georgian and Victorian buildings.

In the tightly packed terraces of the present-day Bo-Kaap and the tenements of District Six, coloured descendants of slaves evolved a unique, evocatively Capetonian brand of jazz, which is well worth catching live if you can.

South Africa, Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula

More than a scenic backdrop, Table Mountain is the solid core of Cape Town, dividing the city into distinct zones with public gardens, wilderness, forests, hiking routes, vineyards and desirable residential areas trailing down its lower slopes.

Standing on the tabletop, you can look north for a giddy view of the city centre, its docks lined with matchbox ships.

To the west, beyond the mountainous Twelve Apostles, the drop is sheer and your eye sweeps across Africa's priciest real estate, clinging to the slopes along the chilly but spectacularly beautiful Atlantic seabord.

To the south, the mountainsides are forested and several historic vineyards and the marvellous Botanical Gardens creep up the lower slopes.
Beyond the oak-lined suburbs of Newlands and Constantia lies the warmer False Bay seabord, which curves around towards Cape Point.

Finally, relegated to the grim industrial east, are the coloured townships and black ghettos, spluttering in winter under the smoky pall of coal fires - your stark introduction to Cape Town when driving in from the airport on the eastern outskirts of the city.

South Africa, Cape Town

Surrounded by the contrasts of mountains, peaks and the open sea, the scenery of the area is outstanding.
Capetonians are justly proud of their beautiful city and visitors are taken to recognised and well-placed viewsites where they can admire the vistas of massive rock formations, sweeps of ocean and indigenous flora.
The night scene from the slopes of 350m Signal Hill is a spectacular sight.

Many of the treasures of the historic Cape can be seen in the period furniture, the old china and glass; costumes and paintings which are kept in the city's museums and national monument buildings.

Along with its rich heritage of natural beauty is the elegance of hold homesteads, the festivals and carnivals.

An annual tradition is the Cape "Coon Carnival" when the local communities vie with each other in costumes, song and dance.

Cape Town is South Africa's most romantic, beautiful and most visited city.

South Africa, Johannesburg

Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city and the industrial and financial hub of the Country.

Johannesburg was built on gold, discovered in 1886 when an itinerant Australian prospector, George Harrison,  stumbled on the Witwatersrand reef, the world's most prolific repository of the metal.
The mines still enrich South Africa, though their importance has declined.

Welcome to South Africa !

South Africa presents an ever - changing pattern of contrasts, from lush, subtropical forests in the east to the semi-desert wilderness of the far west, and from sparkling, sun-drenched beaches along the 3,000 kilometers coastline to the high remote peaks of the rugged, sometimes snow-capped mountain ranges.

It is a land of Midas treasures of mineral wealth exceeded only by the unequalled variety of plants and wildlife, breath-taking natural splendours, and the richness of the cultural mix.

For the overseas visitor and local traveller, South Africa truly is "a world in one country".
